The Consensus Putter

The Consensus Putter does not model the break. It asks. On address, an array of sensors in the sole polls the individual blades of grass along every candidate line and tallies their responses. The putter then reports the line preferred by the majority of the green.

Because the reading is democratic rather than calculated, it is immune to the misjudgement of slope that afflicts human players and optical instruments alike. The grass has no reason to lie.

The Continental Putting Laboratory found that lines returned by consensus agreed with the true break in 98% of cases; the remaining 2% were attributed to grass in disagreement with itself.
